usually, i'm out here shopping doing the last minute thing, but for a change i'm working. so i got to watch people work and push it to the very late minute. twas the night before christmas. this time, it's not a cliche. it really is christmas eve. >> i was scared everything was going to be closed. >> i can't believe christmas came so soon. it's kind of like, man, at the last minute, just out here trying to shop. >> reporter: she wasn't the only one, as people packed the stores trying to get a deal. >> i seen in the paper this morning, they had a tv for $199. >> reporter: lots of people had the same idea. tvs and electronics seemed to be the popular things leaving best buy. >> now i've got the challenge of wrapping it. >> reporter: among many shoppers getting the last minute gifts. his present is a surprise for a secret santa exchange. when you're playing about the

big boys, big dollars will be spent. >> $500 minimum? >> yeah, so it's got to be something nice. >> this is what i want for christmas. >> reporter: grocery stores like safe way were also packed with people looking for gifts. >> it's half price now. i have plowers, i have a pie. >> reporter: she also has the holiday cheer, proving that even though this is a tough time for some, the importance of the holidays is just being present. >> is it really nice to be around a lot of people, and everyone is very pleasant. it just feels good to be social right now. >> reporter: that's the true holiday spirit among many people. also, another good thing that happened this week, is oakland raider watson earlier this week, donated one week's salary to a sick girl's family. >> paul chambers live in alameda. more details now. the national retail federation forecast holiday sales this year to increase.

they expect a bit more than 4% from last year to $16 billion. a big turn around for sony pictures and its comedy, "the interview." the movie will have a limited release in movie theaters tomorrow. >> you want us to assassinate the leader of north korea? >> yes. >> wah? >> a week ago sony withdrew the movie. the hackers were offended by the film. sony came in for criticism over the cancelation. the company says it reflects its commitment to free speech. the fbi spoke with theater owners asking them to be watchful for any potential threats. from i don't expect to have a problem, but we would be foolish if we don't take any precautioning. >> people with download the movie on google play, and

youtube among other sites. find a list of sheeters showing "the interview" on our website, just go to ktvu.com. new developments in another shooting of a black teenager by a white police officer in missouri. the deadly shooting last night in the city of berkeley, missouri, prompted a candlelight vigil in berkely, california. they expressed emotions over the death of anthony martin. berkeley, missouri is next to ferguson. they're saying the teenager had a loaded gun, and that he threatened the officer. still, this latest incident is adding fuel to the national debate over the use of force by police against young black men. >> reporter: in a region of the country still on edge, protests erupt once again. antonio martin, an 18-year-old black teenager was shot by a white police officer in berkeley, missouri, just two

miles from ferguson. surveillance video captured the event in a parking lot. berkeley's mayor says it shows the young man pointing a gun at the officer, but the officer fires at him. >> we had a police officer responding to a call. protecting the residents of the city of berkeley. >> reporter: according to police, the officer was responding to a report of theft. the mayor said despite being nearby, and the officer involved shooting of a black teen, berkeley is not ferguson. >> the mayor is black. the finance director is black. the police chief is black. and that's why, i believe that we're different from the city of ferguson. >> reporter: in the moments after the shooting, clashes between protesters and police. the victims' mother is demanding answers. >> his girlfriend told me the police was messing with him. >> reporter: the police chief

believes his officer only had one option. >> that choice was made. it didn't have to end with him approaching an officer with his arm extended. >> reporter: the mayor is promising a full investigation. earlier today, protesters in san francisco called for an end to police violence under the banner black lives matter. there were more than 100 demonstrators, many from the lgbt community. it included a die-in at market and castro street. they held a moment of silence for minorities who have been killed by police officers. continuing coverage now of christmas eve celebrations around the world. the miracle site of the birth of jesus drew hundreds of christian pilgrims to jerusalem

kyrgyzstan. they were welcome to stay in the predominantly iraqi region. iraqi kurds are allied with the u.s. in the fight against isis. now to the weather as we take a live look at san jose's christmas in the park. earlier today, we saw some showers across the bay area. >> yeah, but it all dried up this afternoon. tomorrow, what are we going to wake up to for christmas? >> it's going to be kind of chilly tomorrow morning. we're talking about temperatures outside right now. 40s already. it's already cold. the winds are blowing out there. the weather system that went through this afternoon, you remember it? it just flew by. that system went by so quickly, it deposited very, very, very little rain. if you look at san rafael there, the most rain i could find there about .18. everybody else was under a tenth of an inch except oakland at .11. the winds are blowing. let's back this up a bit and

restrictions on interstate 80 from donner lake to kingville. thousands of people took part in a san francisco tradition on this day before christmas. volunteers handed out trays of food to about 3,000 guests serving up prime rib and all the fixens. the 2200 pounds of meat cooked up was donated by joe bets. the owner of the city's famed restaurant, house of prime rib. >> sometimes we take it for granted how well we eat. but for this folks, it's notan automatic. when you give something, it really feels good. i love to do it. >> this is the 23rd year betz has made the prime rib lunch possible. one year to help total strangers. >> they came from all around to

>> yeah, the lefty o'doul's toy drive is underway right now. live from the restaurant on geary and powell where people are still dropping off toys. >> reporter: it looks like people are dropping off toys even as we speak right now, they still have a bin out there. if you look over to my left, you'll see a truck that is just full of toys. more than 2,000 toys that will be picked up any minute now by san francisco firefighters. their goal was 10,000 toys donated in a 20 hour marathon. they achieved that goal and exceeded it within the last hour. they are hoping to add to that tally as the night goes on. it was hard not to break into a smile at lefty o'doul's today with the dancing. ♪ [ music ] a christmas band, and snowflakes falling on gary street. perhaps the biggest joy was seeing the giving of one toy after another all day long.

>> it's incredible, the generosity, the people of the bay area. >> reporter: tom o'doul is lefty o'doul's cousin. witnessing remarkable scenes of generosity. >> what strikes me most is people in need themselves, but still donating a toy to a child who may need it more. >> you've seen it. >> i've seen it today. i've seen it every year since i've been doing it. >> reporter: this toy drive has been going on for 13 years. >> it's an endless tradition for our family since she was born to come over and join in the festivities. we try to teach them to do good for other people and to be kind. >> reporter: the good could be seen in bay view in morning. kids lined up, and picked out their gifts. she says her son will have a merry christmas, thanks to the

generosity of others. >> i can't provide it. as much as i've tried. it means the world to me. >> it's a good feeling to know that you're making a child's day, but giving something, a little toy, as a football. >> reporter: there is no shortage of need, which is why this toy drive will go on, late into the night. >> it's not over until 10:00, the bar is open until 2:00 a.m. we'll take toys anytime you want to bring them. >> reporter: again, the san francisco firefighters have just arrived a minute ago. they're going to pick up these 2,000 toys in the back of this truck. plus more inside lefty o'douls. over 6,000 toys were distributed today. the toys came in. they went out to churches and community centers around san francisco. about 3,000 toys were donated earlier, even before this drive began. that was handed out to kids there, and the tenderloin academy. >> the best part is, there's going to be a lot of happy kids tomorrow morning. the california highway patrol is marking the holiday

weekend with its annual dui crackdown. the maximum holiday enforcement period started at 6:00 p.m. tonight. it is deploying all available officers to look for speeders and other dangerous drivers on the road. the enforcement period runs through midnight on sunday. passengers aboard a hawaiian airlines jet finally made it to honolulu tonight after their plane was diverted balk of a mechanical problem. it landed safely at oakland airport. officials say flight 19 took off from sacramento around 9:30 this morning, but the cockpit crew soon discovered an issue with the cabin pressurization system, prompting the captain to divert to oakland. a small plane crashed this afternoon, killing the two people onboard. after about 12:30 near the sierra foothills. the pilot was on a return flight from gilroy after pinging up his 27-year-old son

alex. they were flying a single engine cessna 172. there are reports of fog in the area at the time of the crash. two men are charged with felony assault in the beating. they argued with a group of men police say mastercard drove rotroff and others from the scene. police in petaluma have arrest add teenager in connection with a string of crimes, including stealing a piece of heavy construction equipment. investigators say 19-year-old tray dominic miller stole an excavator worth about $40,000, and sold it to someone in sonoma county who didn't know it was stolen. authorities also accuse him of stealing credit cards from homes when he worked for a moving company. miller was booked into sonoma

county's jail in lieu of bail. portions of the land's end hiking trail are closed of a a landslide this week. ktvu's noel walker shows us the damage and the view. >> reporter: this place where the ocean meets the land, this is a picture postcard of san francisco. >> this is why we live in california, right? >> reporter: it's called land's end, a place above where land's end is a moving target. >> the landslide, and the geography that it changed, and the trees that have fallen. >> reporter: a landslide yesterday took out trees and exposed the roots like a thread sweater. >> the earth is really wet, so it doesn't take much for it to slide, and there's a lot of trees that's gone down. that's how the geography changing with the landscape. >> reporter: in fact,

landslides here have changed the landscape throughout history. she had land through land's end, until the landslide destroyed the rail line and stopped the train in its tracks. the u.s. geological survey says land's end sits on a historic deep seeded bedrock. so the placement isn't unusual, but the timing is. bedrock slides tend to happen in very yet years, and despite recent rains, we're in a dry period. warning signs, and caution tape along the path aren't keeping sop people from the edge. >> she broke every traffic rule in the book. that was nothing. >> it's great to be here, this is my favorite spot in san francisco. >> reporter: like the call of the sirens, risking the danger of an ever shifting lands end,. >> nature at her best. >> reporter: to experience the beauty of it.

i talked to the u.s. geological survey about the wisdom of having a pass in the landslide area. the solution might have to include moving the path. in san francisco, noel walker, ktvu, channel 2 news. the ridge of high pressure goes over the top of us. not just for tomorrow, but for the next few days. as that happens, the winds have kicked up. reports of strong winds along half moon bay. the low goes to the high and tries to come back in. the wind will blow throughout the night into tomorrow, breezy out there right now. oakland, gusting to 24, santa rosa gusting to 24. these stronger winds should prohibit the location of valley fog. traveling in the early hours tomorrow morning, despite the recent rain and cool overnight lows, the winds are going to

knock that down. i don't anticipate much of any valley fog. 48 in novato. napa is 39 now. you know they're going to get easily down into the low 30s. 48 in santa rosa. they'll make it easily into the mid-30s. friday morning, cooler still, with freezing temperatures. probably some of the cooler numbers we've seen in a while. this low pressure brought a lot of cool air with it. the rain has moved out, but now the cool air has moved in. the next few days are going to be really cool. when i come back, i'm going to take the computer model. you know what tomorrow is going to be like. it's going to be clearing. not that warm. a pretty nice day, but as we move forward into the rest of the holiday week, i'll let you know what you can expect in terms of your time off. many folks are off until january 1. a bay area boy giving back this christmas eve. >> oh, boy, is that for me? a christmas card? >> happy holidays.

last minute christmas tree shoppers in san francisco were able to get a tree for free. the delancey street foundation gave out all the leftover trees and wreaths. the lancing streets provides job training for convicts so they have the skills needed to reenter society. being home for the holidays has special meaning for the families of boys and girls who spend this holiday at children's hospital in oakland. >> the doctors and nurses who spend their waking hours caring for the children.

her ability to get up, stand up, and walk. >> it was hard. >> going forward? scoot all the way to the end. >> just getting around most of the time, and her having to use so much equipment. kids wanting to go play. >> let's put you right here. >> when have you spasticity as your main problem, we try to pinpoint the circuits, the nerves that are misbehaving. she's just got this incredible spirit. >> her personality is out there. her imagination is wild. everybody that comes into contact with her is just like, they love her. they fall in love with her. >> yeah, she's really a people's person. >> let's roll. >> she's like talking to everybody here. >> it's just like a bright light that goes on as soon as you talk to her.

new at 10:00, just a few snips, a bay area woman creates a brighter future for those in need on this christmas eve. danica o'leary used her own time and money to give holiday hair cuts to the homeless. it helps people feel better about themselves. she offered him in a public park. >> reporter: in downtown santa rosa, on this christmas eve, a symphony of sound. a generator to transform this pop up tent into a hair salon, with an audience. the chill of winter, warmed by this hairdresser's gesture. danica o'leary offers free hair cuts to the homeless. taking her combs and scissors to their gathering spot. >> if i have something that i can use to make somebody's life

easier, or better. >> reporter: lea glen tells me is she became homeless several months ago after the loss of her grandmother and her job. a hair cut, she says, makes her feel healthy again. >> changes your whole personality. >> you feel good about yourself, you feel pretty. >> reporter: a renewed confidence. >> yeah, it's better. >> maybe that confidence boost will give them just that little ugh to go get a job. >> reporter: she tries to set up once a month to help the homeless. she says her goal is to help as many homeless people as possible. o'leary makes her living cutting hair. whenever she's able to save about $200, she uses it to rent a generator, and other equipment for her pop up salon. a comfort zone for the area's homeless. >> if you want to take them, they're all yours. >> reporter: the 28-year-old

offers food along with hair cuts. >> i haven't had my hair done in like three years. >> reporter: o'leary has been helping the homeless for four years. she says the best feeling is when she hears back from those who helped. >> having 8 to 10 people see me out, or that are now volunteering at the mission. >> reporter: the hairdresser says she's only doing what she was taught to do by her family. >> always give what you can give. if you don't have money, but you have skills, give. >> for o'leary, the gift of giving is not a holiday tradition, but a human tradition. in santa rosa, amber lee, ktvu, channel 2 news. >> wow. she says she is saving money to go back to school to become a nurse. she says she gets a lot of joy in helping others. an apple company in missouri issued a recall of carmel apples that maybe linked

to listeria. the happy apple company said it recently heard from one of its supplers there may be a reaction in the outbreak. it has affected 29 people in 10 states, including a santa cruz woman who died from the bacteria. a potential mold problem. we went to fire station 16 this morning, where air tests were being conducted. department officials say firefighters from that location were moved to neighboring stations as a precaution in an effort to make sure the neighborhood is adequately covered. fire crews will be positioned in the lock behind the station. crews also plan to do some patrolling in the area. a federal judge in oakland ruled a class action lawsuit against facebook can go forward. the suit filed by users in oregon and arkansas claimed

facebook violated privacy laws by scanning websites for third party links and theiring it with advertisers. the company maintains that the practice was legal, but they did discontinue the practice. a young boy from palo alto is reminding us of the true meaning of the holiday season ann reuben shows us, how he's using gift cards to help complete strangers. >> reporter: much to his mom's surprise, but what cameron wanted to do for christmas was this. he's handing out good cheer and gift cards to the homeless. most are to restaurants, and all come with a hand written note. >> dear neighbor. love your friends in the city of palo alto. >> reporter: it was a recent controversy in palo alto about the homeless being allowed to live in their cars that flagged his interest. >> i kept it for myself for a while. then we had basically a dinner

discussion with everyone. that's when we decided that we should do something for them. >> reporter: instead of asking for gifts for himself this year, ben asked family and friends to hand over their gift cards. >> he's such a great kid. he really inspires me. i'm so impressed by his interest in caring about other people. >> reporter: he's collected nearly 80 gift cards so far, and more keep coming. >> people are sending me gift cards in the mail. chipotle, subway. all right, here you go. happy holidays. >> reporter: he's been walking up and down university avenue to hand them out. >> this is one of the sweetest things i've ever received. hardly anyone is kind to me out here. >> reporter: ben hopes to spread as much joy and kindness as he can this christmas. >> i hope that other people get that holidays aren't about getting, but giving. >> reporter: he hoped to

a jordanian pilot is being held prisoner after his jet fighter went down in syria. isis claims it it used a heat seeking missile to bring down the plane. the u.s. military says that's not true. the 26-year-old jordanian is the first pilot taken prisoner since the air strikes began. the centers for disease control is monitoring one of its employees for possible exposure to the ebola virus. the employee is being monitored for 21 days. the exposure risk occurred at a lab in atlanta during an experiment. the cdc reports as of today, almost 20,000 people have been inaffected with ebola in africa with more than 7500 detects. former president george h.w.

bush remains in a hospital after shortness of breath. a spokesman said the 90-year- old bush had a good day today. at christmas two years ago, he spent seven weeks at the same hospital where he was treated for bronchitis. president obama sent good wishes to the bush family. today, reporters got a glimpse of the president golfing with the prime minister of malaysia in hawaii. the first lady is helping track santa. she took calls to norad from children around the country, asking for the location of santa and his slay. traders on the floor of the new york stock exchange got a special visit today. they were serenaded by singer michael feinstein, following an abbreviated half day of trading for christmas eve. as the stocks, the dow gained 6 points. nasdaq gained 8. the markets are closed tomorrow for the

a san francisco tree decorated with hundreds of hand written notes is attracting a lot of attention this holiday season. its branches is a place for strangers to leave messages expressing their hopes and dreams. the wishing tree has been collecting notes since 2011. this holiday season, there are more wishes than ever.

ktvu's david stevenson met the woman who started it, and learned how the wishing tree has changed her life. >> reporter: this is in bloom. >> it's a really nice touch to the neighborhood. >> reporter: the wishing tree bears the hopes and wishes of hundreds of strangers and friends young and old. >> i'm thinking it's great so many people do it. >> reporter: three years ago, during an unhappy time in her life, she began posting the wishes on the tree outside her home. she invited others to do it as well. >> i thought i would get some joke wishes and people wouldn't take it seriously, but people did take it seriously. i think it's a place for people to just sit and be with themselves and actually listen to their heart. >> you can draw. >> reporter: for neighborhood children, the tree is a place to request something as simple as a new toy for christmas, or to share their anxieties about the wider world.

tomorrow. i know a lot of folks travel around on christmas day. friday morning, we will have some fog, and saturday morning as well. tomorrow will be a pretty easy travel day. a little breezy tomorrow. but not howling winds. i've downgraded the lows tomorrow morning. dropped temperatures a few more degrees. napa at 34 degrees tomorrow morning you could get frost in some of these inland bay valleys. 38degrees in san jose. that's a pretty cool night in san jose. okay here we are thursday, long range model. here's thursday all day. that's the day. here comes friday, that's all day friday, all day saturday. look where the jet stream is. still up here. all day sunday, all day monday. look at that. it's going to be nice. tuesday, new year's eve, and then, new year's day. so it's going to be nice. and it will be cool in the mornings. fog will be returning in about 36 hours.
